Big Spaceship’s Production Diary, and a little drama after the break.

NOTE: Hi, this is repost of an entry that I wrote back in December. While this entry is a bit old I still think that it is interesting.

Today during lunch I was reading about some “drama” about comments made by Big Spaceship’s CEO and founder Michael Lebowitz. After reading everything I could find, I visited the Big Spaceship website since it had been a few months since I was last there and explored some recent of their more recent work. Inside of their Labs section they posted something of a production diary showing the process behind the development of their MAX 2008 for the Adobe events website. I was really impressed and think you should check this document out for the interactive media techniques used for the smoke and northern lights dynamic assets, that look good enough to make believe that they were meticulously animated by hand.

Note that you need Acrobat 9 to view this PDF due to the embeded swf’s. So I guess that you should have an updated version of Flash Player too. Hell just update everything Adobe on your computer.

Here is some of the stuff I was reading about Mr. Lebowitz. Oh the manufactured online drama. I have placed the links in the order you should read them if you’re interested.

  1. A Bigger Idea, written by Michael Lebowitz
  2. Why Owners of Digital Shops Should Quit Whining About Industry Awards, by Merrick (it’s like Cher only one name) (Sorry Mr. Merrick I am sure you get that a lot, and don’t find it that funny anymore) (…or ever did)
  3. Merrick Schmerrick, very wittily titled and written by Jay Wolff
  4. this guy thinks what we do is easy, written by Michael Lebowitz

So there you have it. The original article covering Lebowitz’s initial comments is for subscribers to Advertising Age only. But I don’t think it is needed to get the story. Is it just me or do all these guys have cool names? Wolff, Merrick, Lebowitz. All better that plain old Jamie.

Finally I would like to ask what is your opinion about the amount of credit that designers/companies in these positions should be afforded in award shows over ad agencies? Leave a comment below with what you think.
