Chairlift (from those iPod Nano-Chromatic commercials, and current Indie sweethearts) last week released the music video for their latest single “Evident Utensil” which uses a mesmerizing artifact visual effect. Today I found Kanye West’s newest music video for “Welcome to Heartbreak” which uses the same effect but to what I would say is a lesser degree of success. Is this something that falls under the stealing a visual style/effect category?

Also David O’Reilly has used this effect in some of his animated shorts. I am pretty sure you can achieve a similar effect using some of the plug-ins available in the Sapphire FX suite.

Chairlift’s video was directed Ray Tintori from Court 13 and Kanye’s was directed by Nabil Ederkin.
If anybody is interested I can look into finding out how to create this effect, leave a message in the comment if you are.
“And my head keeps spinning
Can’t stop having these visions, I gotta get with it
And my head keeps spinning
I can’t stop having these visions, I gotta get with itI’ve seen it, I’ve seen it before
I’ve seen it, I’ve seen it before
I’ve seen it, I’ve seen it before
I’ve seen it, I’ve seen it before”-lyrics from Welcome to Heartbreak. Sorry I couldn’t help myself.

Kim Moyes used a bit of the ol’ compression in the Beck clip. That or the version I have is fucked
Hi Sam, thanks I wasn’t familiar with the video. I think Beck’s “Youthless” video is directed by Kim’s lesser known brother Kris who has a pretty impressive list of videos he has directed. Thanks again Sam and I am pretty sure your video is fine.

I’m interested into how to make this effect. Is it a plugin, or a series of effects.

Sven König who runs popmodernism has written a script for Python that can be used to create the datamoshing effect.
I am going to see if I can find or make something similar using AE, FCP or Premiere. I will post another reply if I do come up with something.

Bob who apparently is the guy who applied the effect in the Chairlift video has a series of videos explaining how to accomplish datamoshing without having to get into Python like Sven’s solution.
I have linked the first in the series. Hope this helps.
